Have you helped someone today?

My day was made much more pleasant today with a private message and $5.

I know $5 is really nothing much to write about, but to me, it means more than the last affiliate contest I won - much more.

Some background:

I am a member of a few forums. In one of them particularly, we all really try to help the other members, especially if they are struggling with some aspect of their business.

There is a newer member in there who is a truly nice guy, and he’s trying very hard to make some forward progress.

He has a relatively good idea for a product line he wants to work on, but his niche was too broad. We had been working on getting him to figure out how to find a more focused niche within that broader niche.

He was getting it, but it was slow, and I could tell at times he was getting frustrated with himself.

Let’s face it, you can only convey so much information through forum posts.

I had previously created an information product that teaches how to find profitable niches, and part of that is how to find laser focused sub-niches, as well as identify the hot buyers within those sub-niches.

I sent this guy a free copy of the product via private message. He said he got it and appreciated it, but it’s been a couple weeks and I hadn’t heard anything back from him. I figured maybe it wasn’t what he was looking for.

In fact, by this time, I had forgotten all about it.

Then, today, $5 shows up in my Paypal that is not attached to a sale. Normally, when money comes in, I can see where it came from, as far as a product sale or an affiliate sale, and can track it.

This payment was just from a Paypal email I didn’t recognize, and had no other info as to what it was for.

Then, a few hours later, I logged into the forum and there’s another private message waiting.

It’s from this guy, and he said he went through the product and it was exactly what he needed to help him get where he wanted to be niche-wise. He said he had already started narrowing down and fine tuning his research based on the lessons from the product. He also mentioned he sent me $5 “for a beer” as a thank you for helping him out.

I must admit, that made me feel fantastic! It’s not even the $5, although the gesture is greatly appreciated. It’s that a fellow marketer was able to be helped and his business will be positively impacted because I reached out to help him.

When we get right down to it, that’s what’s really important in this crazy business of Internet marketing: helping others.

Yes, we need to charge for our products, and we deserve to be paid for that, and paid well.

But, if we are helping others along the way, by creating valuable, informative products and also by reaching out and helping when we see the opportunity to do so, we are enriched as much as those we help.

Zig Ziglar said it best: “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”

Today, I was reminded of that quote, and it made the day a great one.

Have you helped someone today?

If so, you’ll be glad you did.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and stories of those you’ve helped. Feel free to leave a comment below.

  1. How wonderful, Ed. I love that Ziglar quote – and it is absolutely true. One of the things on my daily must-do checklist is to be able to answer yes to “have I helped someone today” and it is so easy to do!

Thank you for sharing your experience. Such a lovely post to read first thing in the morning!

    • Glad you like it, Vidyaji! That’s a great idea to add that to a checklist to make sure we are helping someone every day.

  2. Hi Ed, so kind of you to share. Trust the feeling was really awesome n fulfilling. To be honest, I have been trying to identify my niche. Wonder if your book can help too. As for the forum that you were both in, sounds like a very helpful bunch of people. Wonder if it is an exclusive or free to join group? Thank you for making a difference.

    To your Abundance, Sandy :)

    • Hi, Sandy, Yes, very awesome and fulfilling! I am sure the product will help. It is listed on the products page (Profitable Market Research Made Easy) if you want to read about it. I’ll send you an email this evening (will be on the road all day today) with more info. The forum is Earn1kADay. It is not free, but it is worth every penny. It is hands down the best forum I have ever belonged to. You can click here to read more about it. Thanks again for your kind words. Please look for an email from me this evening. Ed

  3. It’s moments like those that can keep you going through the challenges of working online. I believe it’s delivering something of value that’s important. Only then can you expect value back.

    • Absolutely! I usually take it one step further, though. I never expect anything back when I do things like that. Then there is no frustration or disappointment. I know it comes back around though in some form or fashion. Thanks for your input! It is appreciated.

  4. Hi Ed,

Dude, loved this post. Life is just too short to live it selfishly. Like Native Americans, I try to leave things in better shape than I found them upon arrival. ‘Things’ being my fellow humanoids. Edward

    • I totally agree! If we all just left things a little better than we found them, profound changes would occur quite rapidly on a global scale.

  5. This post is such an excellent reminder that “thank you” comes in many sizes and forms. I had been wondering what to do for someone who has helped me a great deal. Since I can’t afford a private plane, maybe this approach is the better idea. Thanks for sharing!

    • Mialei, Thanks for the kind words and I am please that you found some inspiration and a solution. All the best! Ed
